“viewPOINT” : Contemporary Approaches To Location Painting and Drawing”

APRIL 2020 (9.30-4.30pm) will run from the Arboretum at Stansted Park.

The arcadian Aboretum has a remarkable tree collection from around the world and we are looking forward to seeing you all again in APRIL 2017.

“indART”, exploring iconic examples of industrial archeology,

architecture and other unique man made motifs.

2020 DATES TBA Two fantastic venues that proved very popular are, THE ROYAL ARMOURIES, Fort Nelson and the Southwick Steam Brewery.

This Mixed Media course gives students a unique opportunity to draw and paint the last Victorian Steam Brewery in the country.

Fort Nelson is part of a massive ring of brick, masonry and earth forts; it was built to provide the fire power to deter an enemy attack on Portsmouth from inland. Portsmouth was Britain’s premier naval dockyard, building and maintaining warships that were vital to the defense of Britain and her growing empire. Portsmouth faced the new French dockyard at Cherbourg, only a short 130 km (81 mile) journey for new steam-powered warships. The threat was not simply a direct naval assault. It was feared that a French invasion force might land elsewhere, occupy Portsdown Hill and fire their new, long-range guns to attack Portsmouth below from its landward side. However, despite strong words, the French did not steam across the Channel. By the time the Palmerston forts were completed, France had been humiliated by war with Prussia in 1870. Never used against invaders, the angular forts dominating the chalk ridge of Portsdown were soon called ‘Palmerston’s Follies’. Fort Nelson and the other Portsdown forts had cost a fortune to build. They were one of the biggest defenses ever built in Britain.

More exciting news later !

Chris – Send me an email, so we can catch up. All the best. Martin

Hi Chris – I worked for you at Yachtmail Chandlery in the late 80’s, I wonder, did you ever finish the rebuild of the little gaff sailing boat? Ben Curtis

    • Hi Ben – it’s a long story and an even longer restoration ! I left Yachtmail and went back to being an artist and lecturer and have had very little time to spend on the boat which is now at Tipner on the outskirts of Portsmouth. One day I’ll finish the project and go sailing again but it seems a long way off ! Good to hear from u – what are you doing now ? C

  3. Ben Curtis

Hi Chris, thanks for the reply, get that boat finished! I went on a Flemming 55 to Norway working for the owner, came home and studied engineering at university, I now work in Havant in the electronics industry which is terribly dull. However! for the last 11 years I have owned a Fairey Huntsman 28, I also have a 1930 built wooden racing motorboat built at Hythe by British Powerboat Company, wooden boats and in particular motorboats are my weakness. Married to the very patient Lorna, we live in Hamble.

  4. A voice from the past Chris it’s Dee and I too used to work for you! I have been living in Glos and Somerset but finally back home in New Forest, Sway! My Husband died three years ago and have got together with my old flame who worked in Lymington Haven boatyard Chandlery whilst I was at Yachtmail!!!! I remember your Project boat and how we always questioned when it would be finished, well guess what, my partner has a small folkboat business in Milford, he is a shipwright and ha, ha, we too, have a folkboat project!!!, would love to hear from you to exchange fond memories down in Hamble! P.S. I still have one of your fantastic nautical Christmas cards, so are you famous yet and is it worth anything????????????

    • Hi Dee, its great to hear from you ! Sorry to hear about your husband (was that Hugh?). As for my boat – and you will find this very amusing – I still haven’t finished her !! Things just keep getting in the way and rather than getting on and rebuilding boats – I paint them instead and people pay me good money for it too !! I’m pleased to hear you have a man, not only with one Folkboat but a folkboat business. It would be great to catch up – we are only down the road – so to speak ! Hang onto that xmas card – they are rare commodities. Take care and all the very best Chris x

  5. Lesley Scott

Hi Chris, I am interested in Life drawing/oil painting, or any figurative work, do you have any spaces on any of your courses, I can make most days.
Look forward to hearing from you
    Lesley
