Garden Observations
This developing series of garden studies considers the passage of a plant through its changing stages — from bud, to bloom, to seed pod — and the quiet intelligence of that natural cycle. I am drawn to the structure, rhythm and transformation of these forms, and to the way close observation can reveal something both precise and poetic.
With each new edition, I feel the work becoming more assured. I am developing greater confidence with the medium, allowing the handling, colour and mark making to become more direct and responsive. Although these studies are modest in scale, they are an important part of a larger process, feeding ideas and energy into more ambitious and experimental oil paintings.
